Washington County is located in northeastern New York. Vermont and Lake Champlain make up the county's eastern border. Washington County has a total area of approximately 846 square miles of which 99% is land and 1% water.As of the census of 2000, there were 61,042 people, 22,458 households, and 15,787 families residing in the Washington County, New York. Out ofthe state's 58 counties, Washington County ranks as 39th most populous. The county's name honors the first president of the United States, George Washington.
